Hyperpigmentation can occur either through UV induced inflammation and or hormones. Being exposed to the sun, tanning beds or florescent lighting can cause damage to the skin. The skin then stimulates melanin, darkening the cells to protect the damaged area. This is referred to as melanogenesis. Melanogenesis can also occur when hormones fluctuate, sometimes induced by pregnancy, thyroid issues, menopause, hormone replacement, contraceptives...
Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation can also occur when the surface of the skin is irritated and or inflamed. The most common type of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation occurs after a break out. Acne can sometimes leave the skin inflamed, and irritated. Luckily for you, there are multiple products, devices and treatments to help even out skin tone.
It is imperative that we learn how to protect our skin from hyperpigmentation. We can do so by adding ingredients to our skincare routine that prevent and correct at the same time.
